Just last week my husband and I went away for an overnight. It was the first time we went away in 2 years and the last time we went away I was pregnant. We had been looking forward to this overnight for months. It was just long enough that we could perhaps relax but not too long that we would be concerned about leaving our kids. I know, I know, we could have left for a longer amount of time but one night felt right. Plus with my husband starting a new business we really didn't want to be gone for long. A few months out we put our feelers on Facebook and thankfully the many wonderful friends came back with great places to go in the Hudson River. We built our trip and planned our two days. One of the ways I prepared for it was by listening to the Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt. I finished all 18 hrs 31 mins just in time to leave (literally that morning we left). We started a few hours later than we'd planned but we finally headed out the door after grandma took the kids to the park we were on our way.
The first "we're not in Kansas" any more moment was when we stopped for drink at 7-Eleven. I sat in the car waiting for Nick to come back in. You know, sitting there watching the kids. Except, of course, there were no kids in the car. In fact we could both go into the 7-Eleven at the same time. Mind blown. I'm not going to waste your time going through all the details of everything we did. You can see we spent some time with the former president and first lady. I also could spend pages and pages telling you all about how much I LOVE Eleanor Roosevelt but perhaps we'll leave that one for another time.
After we got a little culture and learned a bit, officially giving this vacation purpose we headed to Hudson Whiskey. I tell you this because the place we went to was fantastic. We tried their whiskey and the rye and we were once again impressed by the ease in which we could be adults doing our own thing. We remembered doing such things in the past but it had started to feel like a rumor.

On a side note, jam in your drink should be tried by everyone at least once.
When planning this trip we really tried to do only adult things hence the Presidential Library and the whiskey tasting. So of course we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast. It was lovely. The perfect combination of assisting us and leaving us alone. You know how B&Bs are. Sometimes they can be just a bit intrusive. This place however was perfect.
The next day was filled with hiking and drinking wine and a little more of the Roosevelts. Honestly we could have been doing anything. Anything that required adults and that would mean that the children would not enjoy it. What did we do that children might not enjoy? We had ice cream for lunch. I'm sure they would hate that. We sure did enjoy it.
Its amazing what going out for a little time did for us. I know other folks are a little better at date nights than we are but whether you do date night or you don't, I highly suggest getting time together as grown ups. I know, I know. This is nothing new I'm telling you. I guess I'm just telling you because I was told it over and over again and yet I didn't follow the advice. So be better than us and follow my advice. Get out there. Be grown ups!
